How long have you been in business?
Ventura Dive & Sport has been serving the needs of local divers since May of 1989 making us the largest, most-respected dive center in the region.
What is your primary product or service?
Ventura Dive & Sport has a multitude of products and services, so you could reasonably say that the primary product or service that we offer is the one that interests you (our customer) when you walk into our store. We carry all the major brands of diving and snorkeling equipment; we teach virtually every type of dive course you could ever ask for and we offer diving trips everywhere on the planet, from the beautiful Channel Islands to exotic destinations such as Fiji, Borneo and Micronesia!!
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
As the owner of Ventura Dive & Sport, as well as the dive boat Raptor, I have been focused on water-sports and diving since I was a young boy. My college degrees are in management and education, so the step I took in 1985 (leaving my job as a high school teacher and moving from Iowa to San Diego CA) was not as big a reach as a lot of folks first thought! The dive industry does, after all, revolve around teaching people how to dive, supplying the equipment they need and providing the opportunity to dive... and that involves management.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
No other dive center in the state can boast that they offer all that Ventura dive & Sport brings to the table: an impressive, well-stocked sales floor, a well-trained staff consisting of nothing but dive instructors who dive frequently and have firsthand knowledge regarding equipment and training, an on-site dive pool, a state-of-the-art multi-media classroom and a custom-built 46' dive boat docked a stone's throw from our front patio. Dare to compare and you will have to agree that we have it all.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only one location. Dividing one's attention between multiple locations has been the end to several of our past competitors and I prefer to do the best possible job with one location.
Provide detailed directions to your location
101 southbound: exit Seaward and turn L on Harbor Blvd. Go approx 1.5 miles to the light at Spinnaker. R on Spinnaker approx 1/2 mile to sign on right which says Ventura Harbor Village. Turn into parking lot and you will find us on the ground level of bldg 1559. 101 northbound: exit Victoria and turn L. Go 3/4 mile to light at Olivas Park Drive and turn R. Go two miles until you cross over Harbor Blvd and street name changes to Spinnaker. 1/2 mile to sign on right which reads Ventura Harbor Village. Enter parking lot... we are on ground floor of bldg 1559.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa/MC/Discover/Amex) as well as debit cards and purchase-orders from established accounts; and we do still accept cash (provided you have two forms of ID and allow us to fingerprint you after the sale.) (kidding)
Which areas do you service?
We are located in the Ventura Harbor Village shopping center in the Ventura Harbor. Our dive boat, the Raptor, is docked right in front of the store. We conduct our diving classes on-site and our boat makes several runs weekly to the Channel Islands, about 45 minutes off the coast.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Ventura Dive & Sport is owned and operated by James and Christy Smith.
What are your hours of operation?
Ventura Dive & Sport is open M-F from 10 AM to 6 PM. Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM. We are frequently open a bit earlier on the days that the Raptor has an 8 AM departure (in order to fill rental orders and sell last-minute items to the divers who are going out on the boat.)
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
We have had several families bring three generations of divers through our training system... you can't really find a better compliment than that.
