How long have you been in business?
Thirty six years in Santa Barbara. The firm has always handled cases in Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo and we opened a branch office in Santa Maria in 2004.
What is your primary product or service?
We are trial lawyers handling criminal defense and civil litigation matters. We do not handle transactional matters, wills and trusts, divorces but will assist in making appropriate referrals. We limit our practice to criminal or civil disputes -- this includes pre-filing ro pre-indictment negotiations, mediation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution as well as trials, appeals, writs and oter courtroom litigation in State and Federal Courts
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Robert Sanger is a Certified Criminal Law Specialist, certified by the State Bar of Califorina Board of Legal Specialization. Partner Catherine Swysen and associate counsel are experienced in litigation and appelallate work.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We limit our practice to representing people and business organizations which are involved in disputes. This may involve repsonding to criminal investigation or actual criminal defense in court. We also defend people and business who have been sued and represent plaintiffs in significant business litigation, personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits. We have an in house investigator and several legal assistants, law clerks and staff to assist the lawyers in doing this work. We are familiar with the State and Federal courts as litigators. We stay on the cutting edge of litigation law, practice and procedure and are involved in professional organizations relating to this work.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have offices in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. We do not intend to expand. We intend to continue to serve the public primarily int he tri-counties (Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo) area. We do take major cases outside of the area, throughout California and in other states and jurisdictions.

The Santa Barbara Office is on DE La Guerra Street, a block and a half from State Street. From the Freeway, take Garden North to De La Guerra, turn left and we are a blok and a half on the right. Parking under the building.
The Santa Maria Office is directly across the street from the Courthouse on Cook Street. Take Main to Miller and right on Cook. Pull into the parking structure for the Mall. We are the first office on the first floor next to the parking entrance on Cook (301 East Cook Street, Suite A, Santa Maria).
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, checks and cash.
Which areas do you service?
Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo and Ventura primarily. We handle federal cases in the Central District, located in Los Angeles, and do significant cases in the Southere, Northern and Eastern Districts of Califorina as well as in other states and federal jurisdictions.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Sanger and Swysen is a professional partnership. Catherine Swysen is the Managing partner.
What are your hours of operation?
8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and other hours based on emergency need or by appointment. We have a twenty-four hour emergency contact. After hours, call the main number 805 962 4887 and follow directions to be transferred to the lawyer on duty for emergency calls.
